Custer’s leadership during the Battle of the Washita~ 1868 June 2010

UH, OH….. Shaw’s thinking again…….

For an old guy who’s goal is to simplify things…. I’m busier than ever and loving every minute of it. So much going on, but that’s our lives… right?  Goin here, there, everywhere.  Makin plans, and hopefully NOT breakin plans. Cause in today’s hectic pace lifestyle it’s more important than ever to keep in touch with friends, family and show the people in your lives that you care.  It’s tough, I know to make the time to have lunch, call and just say hi.  Everyone’s lives are busy, and it seems like it’s a competition on who’s the busiest.  I have conversations with people and it’s,” I’m BURIED… I’m Swamped… I can’t….  I just can’t….. ” And I sympathize with them, but I also do not want to be them.  I want to be the guy who calls, keeps in touch and trys.  It’s too easy to stop calling or keeping in contact with someone who never calls back or never instigates the contact.  It’s too easy to get angry and stay there.  But…… it’s just not healthy, so I’m going to try my best to be better than that and keep doing what I know is right and fulfilling for my life. Speaking of much going on, it’s time to vote again….. UG…. the TV ads, the BS, the lies.  I just don’t know who the hell to trust anymore.  Is it possible to to hold office anymore and not be a sell out to the political system?  I”m not talking morals here, I’m talking selling your votes to the interest group that donates the most money to your re-election campaign. I’m talking the basics of our system.  And that worries me, big time. Can this trend be stopped?  How can it be stopped?  Don’t know. But I wish I had the answer to that one, because if we can’t stop the madness and get back to our founding values, were going to be the next Rome, soon….  OK, enough politics…  How about Baseball!!!    Yea baby, if you’ve ever read one of my posts, and both of you know who you are…:-)  you know I’m a huge San Francisco Giants fan, and this is my year…  They’re in the NLCS by gawd!!  That’s the National League Championship series and the winner goes to the World Series. After 6 months of playing baseball there are 4 teams left in it.  In the NL it’s the Giants vs. the Phillies, and in the AL it’s the Rangers vs. the Yankees.  The Giants haven’t been to the World Series since 1989 when they played their cross town rivals and lost to the Oakland A’s in the Earthquake series…. Does anyone remember that one?  And the Texas Rangers just won their first playoff series in their lives, and that goes back to the days when they were the Washington Senators prior to their move to Dallas in the early 70’s.  So, the underdogs in these series has to be the Giants and Rangers, of course I’d like to see the Giants in the Series again, and I’ve promised…. or threatened my wife that if they do, were going to SF and I’m going to my first World Series game of my life.  But wouldn’t the baseball gods be pleased with another Giants/Yankees classic world series??  Or am I the only one who thinks the Giants deserve another shot at the Yankees who beat them in 7 games in 1962?  Or maybe you just haven’t thought much about it.  That’s probably it….Anyway, what a thrill it is to have YOUR team still in it.  A thrill the Seattle fans have NOT had the pleasure of having for gawd knows how long.

What else you ask??  Hm…. as you also know … both of you.. that I’m a huge Military History fan.  I just went on a three book bender on the Band of Brothers story of the 101st Airborne, 506th PIR ( Parachute Infantry Regiment) Company E of WWII fame.  I read the last two first, and now I’m reading Steven Ambrose’s Band of Brothers. I’ve seen the 12 part HBO series about 3 times now and after reading Dick Winters books,  Biggest Brother, and Beyond Band of Brothers, it’s time to get to the story that started it all.  This story just brings me to tears, the guts, the determination the ability of these young men to endure the hardships and be part of a generation that literally saved the world from Nazi and Imperial Japanese enslavement.  Those were the days when America came together in a common cause and helped saved Europe, Asia, and the world from a horrible fate. We owe these men more that we could ever guess, I just want you all to imagine what our world would be like today if this country and our young men hadn’t stepped up and settled it the way they did.  This story makes me very proud to be an American, and in today’s troubling world we need all the things we can get that make us proud.  So, if you haven’t seen it for whatever reason, go rent this and be prepared to ponder. And then you’ll find yourself wondering if you had what it took to do that.  And then you’ll find yourself trying to be better, because you would like to believe that you have what it takes to be like that.  Then, you’ll find yourself being better, because you’re trying so hard, and when you try that hard good things come your way.

Have a great weekend everyone.  I told you we were in trouble…. I’ve been thinking again.

Armed Forces Day ~ Ft Lewis Washington ~5-15-10

This weekend we’ll be in Ft. Lewis participating in Armed Forces Day.
In past years over 30,000 people have come through to view Military hardware of the past. From Rev War, Civil War, WWI, and WWII re-enactors from all over the west coast will be there, in uniform to talk about what they do to keep living history alive.
There are food booths and it’s just a wonderful day to bring the kids to teach them about our countries past and present military. This event is open to the public and is a great opportunity to mingle with Military men, women and their families throughout the day.
Our group, the 1st US Cavalry will bring our horses, set up our Cavalry camp and answer any and all questions regarding our impression of the mounted warriors of yesteryear. We’ll put on a riding demonstration which will show mounted firing and saber fighting. As I’ve mentioned before, this will be my final season of Cavalry reenacting. I really enjoy going to the annual Armed Forces day, as it’s my chance to thank the brave young men and women of our armed forces for their service.
The people really seem to swarm to our camp to see the horses and gear that was used in 1863.
We use McClellan saddles, black powder weapons and ride hard, hard hard. This hobby is very hard work, but very satisfying indeed. As commanding officer it’s my job to assure each that each and every rider has been working his horse and training them to be around the public and has the ability to handle all situations they might encounter there. Our multi level safety testing has been developed over time and working with these horses training them to put up with all the stimulation we throw at them, takes patience and time.
We have to train all season long and constantly work and develop a trust between horse and rider.
The fact is, that were dealing with a live animal here, not a jeep that you can turn the key to and have them operate the same time after time. Our animals are very good, and very trained, as our riders are. However the fact remains that as a living thing, they have good and bad days. They have days where the gunfire, tents, bugles, cannons, sabers, et all simply do not bother them. They’ve been taught that those things albeit scary, will not hurt them and that they can trust the person on their back will not lead them into danger. Some days the best horse will just not want to play. Some days the perfect veteran horse will balk at galloping towards a group of men that plan on shooting at us. Real or not, the smoke, noise and stimuli just gets to them. When that happens, we back off and start the trust and training again. It really never stops.
So, come on down, bring the family. You’ll see all things Military and get to see how the soldiers of yesterday fought and saved our nation.

Heres some video of us in action:

So, I have to share

I’m watching the end of the Movie, ” We were soldiers once”.  It’s the story of the US Army’s first gaunt into the Ia Drang Valley in 1965, where the wise leaders dropped Col. Moore and his boys right on the front doorstop of a hole damn NVA Base Camp.  And they get surrounded, and as Moore and his SGTMGR, are trying to stop the slaugher their boys are now living, Moore ( Mel Gibson) Sez:  ” SGT Major, you think this is how Custer felt?”  And I love this.  the Sgt Mgr is played by Sam Elliot, one of my faves.  He says to Moore in his gravely worn out voice, ” Sir….. Custer was a PUSSY….. You’re NOT…..   Cracked me the hell up.. Perfect…. just perfect…..
